The story of Heckler & Koch began at the end of World War II with the dismantling of Waffenfabrik Mauser AG by the French occupying forces for the purpose of war reparations. They destroyed the majority of factory records, machines, and tools, but three Mauser engineers managed to save a portion of factory property. Those engineers were Edmund Heckler, Theodor Koch, and Alex Seidel.
In 1948, they took the vacant factory and created the Engineering Office Heckler & Co. A year later, the company was renamed Heckler & Koch GmbH. At first, it manufactured tools, parts, and bicycles and entered the firearms business in 1956 with the G3 battle rifle, seeking a tender for infantry rifles for the German Federal Army (Bundeswehr). The company won the government contract, and by 1959, the G3 was a standard weapon of the Bundeswehr.
In 1974, Heckler & Koch diversified into two areas, making weapons for military and law enforcement forces as well as hunters and sports shooters. Today, the company has operations in Germany, the USA, the UK, and France and produces firearms for police and special forces of NATO countries and civilians.
