Mossberg has always been about innovation. Before the company's foundation in 1919, Oscar Frederick Mossberg worked in several gun manufacturing companies and contributed to the development of the firearm industry by introducing new mechanisms. Since O.F. Mossberg & Sons came to light, the company has registered more than 100 patents.
Mossberg's first firearm was the Brownie four-shot .22 pistol. It was derived from an earlier design Oscar patented when working for J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co., ten years before the foundation. The model was marketed as a weapon for hunters to humanely kill wounded animals. The pocket pistol cost only $6 and quickly caught the fancy of gun enthusiasts. The Brownie gave an impulse to the company's growth, and consequently, .22 caliber shotguns and rifles began to emerge.
In the 1940s, Mossberg got several contracts from the US military for the production of Model 42 and 44 .22 caliber bolt-action rifles and parts for Browning .50 caliber machine gun and Lee-Enfield bolt-action rifle.
Mossberg Pump Shotguns
In 1962, the company introduced its most successful firearm, Mossberg 500 pump-action shotgun. Originally, it was intended for use by beginner hunters and sportsmen but quickly became a popular weapon for self-defense. Waterfowl hunters fell in love with the 500 series because it was low maintenance and allowed all components to be easily stripped and cleaned.
The Mossberg 500, together with 590 and 590A1, are the only pump-action shotguns that comply with all Mil-S-3443 requirements. The core requirement considers the full interchangeability of components. Today, variations of the 500 model are adopted by the US military and law enforcement.
Over the 60 years, the sales of the Mossberg 500 have reached 10 million, making it one of the world’s most popular firearms. The company also produces break-action and autoloading shotguns.
Mossberg Rifles
The company produces bolt-action, lever-action, and autoloading rifles for various applications. The Mossberg Patriot series contains rifles suitable for deer, elk, and bear hunting, whereas the Mossberg MVP series has AR mag-fed rifles for long-range shooting.
