For nearly 90 years, Outers has been a gun cleaning mainstay, producing innovative chemicals, solvents, and tools for gun care. The company was founded by Vernon F. Dale and Oscar Egeland way back in 1934 and originally operated from Dale’s house in Onalaska. As early as one year after, the company was granted its first government contract for the manufacturing and supply of cleaning tools for the FBI. Due to the high demand for Gunslick lubricant, the Outers name spread among the defense industry actors.
At the outbreak of WWII, the demand for the company’s products skyrocketed. During the war, it manufactured cleaning products for weapons ranging from .22-caliber rifles to anti-aircraft guns, and in 1943, it earned the Army-Navy “E” Award for excellence in production. Only 5% of companies involved in the production of war equipment picked up the award.
Since Vernon Dale died in 1976, the company went through several purchases and now operates as a subsidiary of Vista Outdoor. Its brand portfolio includes such well-respected companies as Bushnell, Primos, Remington, Federal Premium, and many others.
