Southern Bloomer Products as a Part of a Cleaning Kit
It’s essential to clean your rifle/handgun/shotgun properly using products, materials, and tools specifically designed for this task. Ideally, you should lightly clean your gun after each shooting session and deep-clean it a few times a year, depending on how often you shoot. For complete beginner gun owners, let’s mention that a basic gun cleaning kit includes the following:
- Rod. It should be made with a softer material than the gun barrel because even the slightest ding on the bore can impact the firearm’s accuracy. Since barrels are made of steel, an aluminum, brass, or carbon fiber rod won’t scratch it.
- Jags. A little attachment goes on the end of the rod and holds a cleaning patch.
- Brush. Usually, bronze brushes are used to remove stubborn carbon residue, while nylon works fine for lighter cleaning.
- Chemicals. These include a solvent, degreaser, lubricant, and protectant.
- Bore snake. It’s quick and easy to use - you just pull it through the bore, and that’s it.
- Patches. Pressed to a jag on the tip of the rod, it delivers gun-cleaning solvents to the bore and parts. Shooters use pre-made patches, custom-cut patches, make-up patches, and pieces of old t-shirts, but we recommend Southern Bloomer patches.
Are Southern Bloomer Patches Any Good?
A gun cleaning patch is a round or square piece of cotton or synthetic material pre-cut to fit a certain caliber and intended for one-time use. Southern Bloomer cleaning patches are 100% cotton, and thanks to masterful cotton knitting, they leave no strings and threads and have virtually no lint. Generally, cotton is desired for delivering chemicals to the bore or removing liquids because it has excellent absorption properties. However, if you look for the opposite, you need synthetic patches.
Custom-made patches may turn out to be too big or too small to fit the bore. With Southern Bloomer gun cleaning patches cut for a particular caliber, you won’t have such a problem. Southern Bloomer round cotton cleaning patches are the most efficient because when compressed by the bore, they hold a larger effective surface than square patches. We also carry Southern Bloomer cleaning rags. Washable and reusable, they are ideal for taking care of the rest of your gun.
