The story of Springfield Armory began nearly two hundred and fifty years ago, in 1777 when the country was fighting for its independence in the Revolutionary War. George Washington was looking for a place that would provide an advantageous position to settle a stronghold. He discovered Springfield, Massachusetts to be tactically promising and commanded the creation of ammunition storage. In 1794, the company began manufacturing its first muskets.
Springfield Armory existed until 1968 when it was closed due to budgetary concerns. And if not for the Reese family who purchased the name, Springfield Armory would have stayed in the past forever. The Reeses refounded the company in 1974 in Illinois.
