Austria is famous for several things: the Alps, chocolate, and Glock pistols. It would be an understatement to call Glock one of many handgun-producing brands, for it has long ceased to be “one of many.” It is very challenging to become the first association when the word pistol is mentioned, but Glock has won this competition for a place in people’s minds.
The funny thing is that Glock wasn’t initially connected with firearms. The company was founded in 1963 by a successful businessman and manufacturer of injection molding parts and components Gaston Glock. The production of the first military products began only in the 1970s. They included military knives, grenade casings, and machine-gun belt links. But no firearms yet.
Glock’s firearm-producing history began in 1980 when the Austrian Armed forces announced a tender for a new, modern duty pistol. Gaston Glock assembled a team of leading handgun experts from military, police, and sport-shooting circles to create the winning Glock 17. In 1982, the pistol was adopted by the Austrian military and police forces. This event raised a wave of interest towards the company from Western European countries and the United States. Three years later, Glock 17 was adopted by Norwegian and Swedish military forces and later became a standard NATO-classified sidearm. The fact that it took only five years for Glock to become an internationally appraised brand is quite impressive.
Since then, Glock has been one of the dominating handgun producers on the market. Several generations of renowned pistols were established, each of them even more flawless than the previous one. Many of the brand’s signature models also get upgraded every now and then Glock 19, Glock 26, and Glock 42 are among them, not to mention the renowned 17 that opens every new generation of handguns. Even though the original model was chambered in 9x19mm, today Glock produces pistols of the most popular handgun calibers, like 22 LR, .380 Auto, .40 S&W, .45 Auto, and 10mm AUTO.
