Echelon 4.0C Launch and Its Impact on Handgun Design

Recently, Springfield released the new Echelon 4.0C (aka Echelon Compact) 9mm pistol. Read to learn what makes the Echelon series unique compared to other pistols, including the XD lineup and the advancement behind the new Echelon Compact.

The Original Echelon: Born to Redefine Modern Duty Pistols

Springfield Armory shook the firearms world in July 2023 with the launch of the Echelon (today,  the Echelon 4.5F), a completely new striker-fired duty pistol series. Designed with ergonomics, versatility, and modularity in mind, this pistol was built to meet the expectations of modern shooters—and it delivered.

At the core of the Echelon’s innovation is the Central Operating Group (COG), a self-contained stainless steel chassis comparable to SIG’s P320 Fire Control Unit (FCU). This feature allows users to switch seamlessly between grip modules, offered in small, medium, and large sizes, to fit their hand size perfectly. The Echelon offers even greater ergonomic customization with three interchangeable backstrap options, plus it boasts ambidextrous controls and a sleek, all-new silhouette.

Beyond modularity, the Echelon set new standards with its Variable Interface System (VIS)—a revolutionary optics-mounting system compatible with 30+ red dot sights.

Shooters and critics alike were impressed, and the accolades followed. The Echelon 4.5F earned industry awards such as Guns & Ammo’s 2023 Handgun of the Year and the 2023 NASGW-POMA Caliber Award for “Best New Handgun,” cementing its position as a top-tier pistol.

The Expanding Echelon Lineup

Soon after the standard full-size Echelon, the company introduced the threaded barrel version for suppressor users as well as 10- and 15-round versions for restrictive jurisdictions.

Then, in the fall of 2024, the Echelon 4.5F Comp debuted. This integrally compensated model introduced a single top port to reduce muzzle rise for faster and more accurate follow-up shots. Combining the original COG and VIS with a sleeker, performance-driven design, the Comp version catered to elite competitive shooters and defense-minded professionals.

Enter the New Era with the Echelon 4.0C

The success of the original Echelon 4.5F naturally paved the way for a smaller, more concealable companion—the brand-new Echelon 4.0C, unveiled in December 2024. While designed specifically for concealed carry, the 4.0C doesn’t sacrifice shootability and accuracy. With a 4-inch barrel and reduced frame profile, the pistol still has sufficient sight radius and weight for precise shooting while remaining easy to conceal.

Springfield kept the features that made the original Echelon a favorite among shooters—COG chassis for grip interchangeability, VIS optics system, and backstrap modifications. Also, the new Echelon Compact ships with two magazines—a 15-round flush-fit mag and an 18-round extended mag.

With such a feature profile, the Echelon Compact is destined for success, like the Glock 19 or SIG P365XL.

As for variants, the 4.0C is offered in U-Dot or 3-Dot Tritium Night Sight configurations and comes in multiple capacity options for compliance with regional restrictions, including 10-, 15-, and 18-round variations. For those who prefer suppressed shooting, Springfield has a threaded-barrel 4.0C variant.

Early feedback from the firearms community is overwhelmingly positive. Shooters appreciate the familiar feel of the much-loved Echelon lineup, now packaged in a СС frame without sacrificing the hallmark features of its predecessor.

Springfield Echelon vs XD Pistols

The Echelon series marks a clear departure from the traditional XD series. While both are known for their solid reliability, the Echelon introduces features that, for many, make it a step above.

The Echelon brings a sleeker, more contemporary design to the table. With its streamlined slide, scalloped rear wings for easy racking, and aggressive grip texture reminiscent of the Hellcat, it certainly looks and feels more modern than the XD series. Ergonomically, it’s a step up, with high undercuts on the trigger guard and better rear overhang that allow for a higher, more controlled grip.

One of the most noticeable changes is that they removed the grip safety, a feature the XD series is known for. While some fans of the XD value the added safety layer, many shooters found it too much, especially if their grip wasn't perfect. Without it, the Echelon feels more user-friendly.

Now, let’s take a look at the COG one more time. As we mentioned, this feature allows for interchangeability between frames. Customization potential is through the roof, and future variants, including compact and subcompact models, seem inevitable. The XD series, on the other hand, isn’t built for this level of modularity. And let’s not forget about the VIS optics system, which means you don’t need adapter plates for more than 30 red dot models.

When it comes to shooting, the Echelon outshines again due to all the ergonomic features that translate into more controlled fire.

Final Thoughts

With its modular platform, innovative features, and wide range of configurations, the Echelon series proves to be more than just another striker-fired lineup. It’s a bold step in firearms design, offering shooters the flexibility and reliability they demand today.

As for the new Springfield Echelon Compact, it’s ready to make its mark as the go-to option for concealed carry. If you’re looking for the Echelon 4.0C for sale, check out GRITR Sports.
