Made by the famous soviet firearm designer Mikhail Kalashnikov, the AK-47 platform has gotten a lot of play in many countries around the globe. And these include not only countries having socialist sympathies since U.S. gun enthusiasts have acknowledged the worth of the rifle as well. Some even name it the weapon of the century.

Though America’s beloved AR-15 is far more popular, the AK-47 and the AK-74 have their advocates among the U.S. shooting community. And they are not small in numbers. AK-47 vs. AK-74 Magazines

The main difference between the two rifles is, of course, the chambering. The AK-47 is chambered for the 7.62x39mm cartridge, while the AK-74 uses the 5.45x39mm round. If we were to liken the AK platform to the AR platform, we would say that application-wise, the AK-47 is similar to the AR-10, while the AK-74 resembles the M16/AR-15.

Fun fact. The 7.62 NATO, based on the .308 Win designed in 1952, five years after the introduction of the 7.62x39mm, was an anti-soviet round. On the other hand, during the development of the AK-74, the task was to prepare a soviet response to the American 5.56 NATO growing in popularity.

Both 7.62x39mm and 5.45x39mm are intermediate rounds, and it’s their strength. Compared to the American counterparts, the ammo is less powerful but lighter and milder-recoiling.
