We all love powerful, accurate cartridges and ergonomic, robust rifles. The USA gave birth to many talented gunsmiths and cartridge designers who had an enormous influence on the development of the American gun industry and, in the long run, the world’s gun culture. Remember John Browning with his .45 ACP cartridge and 1911 pistol or passionate revolver experts Samuel Colt and Daniel Wesson. We could list dozens of names, but here is one - Roy Weatherby.
Roy had a strong interest in firearms since he was a kid growing up on a Kansas farm. When the Weatherbys moved to Huntington Park, California, he began manufacturing his own guns.
In 1942, Roy Weatherby was on a deer hunt, which ended with a wounded buck. That was the pivotal moment when he decided to change the way the gun industry viewed ballistic performance and began experimenting with wildcatting.
Three years later, Roy founded Weatherby, Inc, which built commercial cartridges and custom rifles. For several years, the company collaborated with other manufacturers. However, in 1958, it introduced the proprietary design developed entirely in-house - the Weatherby Mark V bolt-action.
Today, the company manufactures various versions of its flagship Mark V (Backcountry 2.0, Accumark, Deluxe, etc.) and Vanguard, shotguns, and Weatherby ammunition.
Weatherby Shotguns & Rifles
The iconic Weatherby rifle, the Mark V, is peculiar for having the world’s strongest action built to withstand 6-digit psi pressure of high-power Weatherby magnum ammo. It also has the lowest-in-class bolt rotation, allowing faster reloads and mounting a scope closer to the bore. Recently, the company developed The Weatherby Vanguard rifle has humbler specs but is still a very accurate weapon.
Besides Weatherby cartridges, the 6-lug Weatherby Mark V Standard is chambered in 6mm Creedmoor, .243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Win, and .280 Ackley Improved, while the 9-lug Weatherby Mark V Magnum’s additional chamberings are .300 Win Mag, .338 Lapua Mag, .375 H&H. The Vanguard chamberings include .270 Win, 30-06 Sprg, .243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .308 Win.
The company also manufactures semi-auto, over-under, and gas semi-auto shotguns.
