The Winchester SX4 Waterfowl Hunter Semi-Auto Shotgun in TrueTimber Prairie has improved ergonomics over the previous SX3 model, being slimmer and lighter, with a slightly forward balance point for fluid swinging and follow through. Larger, redesigned operating controls (safety, bolt handle, and bolt release) and a larger trigger guard facilitate getting on target quickly, as well as safe operation. An Inflex Technology recoil pad utilizes directional deflection to pull the comb down and away from the shooter's face, creating greater comfort and allowing for faster follow up shots.

The SX4 uses Winchester's Active Valve System that automatically self-adjusts, allocating the exact gas pressure necessary to fire a wide range of 2-3/4"-3-1/2" hunting loads - critical for any semi-automatic shotgun used by avid waterfowl hunters who hunt multiple species in varied habitats. When firing heavy magnum loads gases vent upward and out of the Quadra-Vent ports in the forearm, further regulating bolt speed.
