Some people have certain preconceptions regarding shotguns. As if all of them are supposed to feature manually operated action, be it lever, pump, or even break action. Even though the majority of iconic shotguns featured in movies indeed belonged to one of those groups, the scattergun family is more varied than that. The semi-automatic action, usually associated with rifles, is no stranger to shotguns either. In all honesty, semi-auto shotguns are becoming more and more popular, for the benefits they provide to their users are too appealing to ignore.
Semi Auto Shotgun
What is it that makes tactical semi-auto shotguns sell like hot cakes? The main advantage they have over their manual-action brethren is increased fire rate. Self-loading shotguns liberate you from the somewhat onerous task of operating the action single-handedly. A semi-auto shotgun, also known as autoloader, utilizes either recoil-driven or gas-operated action to eject the spent shell and load a new one into the chamber. You could hardly call such a shotgun a novelty: the first semi-auto tactical shotgun was constructed in 1898 by John Browning himself. However, it wasn’t until recently that they began to be trusted and preferred by shotgun enthusiasts, mostly because earlier prototypes couldn’t boast sufficient reliability. Technological advancement and rise in quality resulted in rapid popularity growth. The high-capacity semi-auto shotgun became a frequent flier of shooting competitions and various tactical situations. It’s not uncommon to use a semi-auto shotgun for home-defense purposes. With a faster rate of fire and comparatively lower recoil, these shotguns managed to take an honorable place among the members of the scattergun family.
