This Taylors & Company Schofield Charcoal Blue Case-Hardened Revolver features a forged steel case hardened frame, charcoal blue barrel and cylinder, and a two-piece walnut grip with cartouches. The Charcoal Blue finish is a delicate over-oxidized bluing that when new it is a bright blue color and over time with use it will naturally patina to a soft grey. The aging process takes a long time with this finish, but is very beautiful.
Designed by Major George Schofield to be operated with one hand while on horseback, a break-open pistol was ideal for mounted soldiers in the U.S. Cavalry. Shooters could easily eject all six spent cartridges and reload while on horseback. The top break pistol also proved useful to the likes of Jesse James and Wild Bill Hickok. The Schofield barrel latch opens by pulling it back with the thumb and includes the rear sight notch.
